Characters change, but Clarice Starling wasn't just a character to me. Still, in hindsight, it was very strange to be a teenage girl who loved this dark story, reading as it jumped the shark in real-time. Rowling's transphobia understands this all too well. And then it got to that scene, and things quickly fell apart.Įveryone has that moment in their lives when they realize that the stories or pop culture that they love is not perfect. For hours, I sat on the top bunk in the bedroom I shared with my sister, hunched over the book as if I was protecting it. My school didn't have it, but the local library did, so I checked out this beautiful doorstop of a hardback with a rich red cover and jumped right in. Having devoured Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs, I desperately needed to get my hands on the third book, simply titled Hannibal. I was 14 years old and had become wildly enamored with the Hannibal Lecter books thanks to a surprisingly violent selection of titles available in my high school library and my parents' delightfully relaxed attitude to the pop culture my sister and I consumed. To this day, I keenly remember the exact moment and what I was doing when Thomas Harris f***ed over Clarice Starling. It was a meticulously typed manuscript with a few handwritten annotations (you can see them in this book). Some of the Dharma was in the Kerouac archive until 1991 when estate executor John Sampas sent it to Viking Penguin via Sterling Lord. He sometimes referred to it as Book of Dharmas. Jack started writing this book in December 1953 during a concentrated study of Buddhism and finished it in 1956. It's not a straight-through read (I guess it could be for certain readers), but rather the kind of book that you pick up and start reading anywhere and go until your brain is ready to explode from the input. I lovingly refer to this book as a Buddhism coffee table book. This is a virtual tome, 420 pages and over 8" x 10". It's in good condition, and the provenance is that I bought it used from Amazon in January 2012 (click here for evidence and a suggestion by Kerouacian John Dorfner). This copy shows it's a first printing of a 1999 edition, but I sort of doubt that. Item #51 in my Kerouac bookshelf curation project is this Penguin Books softcover edition of Some of the Dharma by Jack Kerouac. A fairly late convert to all things feminist, Fowles writes from a position blind to the recent growth in the popularity of women’s soccer, but his rather crude Freudianism may serve as an interesting - if tangential - comment on The Football Factory, more recently described by Hugh MacDonald in The Glasgow Herald as ‘Fever Pitch with testosterone and eight pints of lager’. John King’s first novel The Football Factory was published some four years after Nick Hornby’s Fever Pitch in 1996, but in spirit it seems to belong to a slightly earlier period in English cultural history and its obsession with a game once described by John Fowles as long ago as the I960’s as ‘twenty-two penises in pursuit of a vagina’ (150). Because ‘ringo’ means ‘apple’ in Japanese. Before she met John Lennon, who was the only Beatle Yoko Ono could name, and why? Ringo. If you want to know the make of George Harrison's first car you will always be able to find the answer (a second hand, two-door, blue Ford Anglia 105E Deluxe, purchased from Brian Epstein's friend Terry Doran, who worked at a dealership in Warrington). Countless books have doggedly catalogued the minutiae of The Beatles. Their influence extended way beyond the realm of music to fashion, politics, class, religion and ethics. They have entered people's minds in a way that did not occur before, and has not occurred since. The Beatles continue to occupy a position unique in popular culture. At that point, we will be at the same distance in time from 1970 as 1970 was from 1920, the year Al Jolson's ‘Swanee’ was the bestselling record and Gustav Holst composed The Planets. On April 10th 2020, it will be exactly 50 years since Paul McCartney announced the break-up of the Beatles.
